I had been inspired to study the Harvard Classics by Bryant Hinckley's example in his son, Gordon's book "Standing for Something." Bryant kept the Harvard Classics in his home library and his son, Gordon, grew up on these books. If Gordon turned out that way from such a great in-home educational experience, maybe a similar effect could take place in me and my children.
After expressing my desires to my husband, for Christmas that year he got me my own collection of the Harvard Classics. I was excited to delve into them, but even more excited to find others with whom to discuss them.
So out went the book list, all excerpts from the Harvard Classics. And I think it was overwhelming. So there was no book discussion group. I began reading anyway and got through the first 8 books or so.
Recently, I decided to resurrect the idea of a colloquium and this time asked for suggestions of books, and posted the idea on WHEN, one of our local home schooling forums. And... BINGO!
We have had three meetings, it was an instant group of amazing women and friends, and great and fun discussions ensued.
If you would like to join us, you can send me an email and I'll send you the info. We meet one Thursday a month at my home.
For August's meeting, we will be discussing:

Treatise "On Friendship" by: Tullius Cicero (Edited by: Charles W. Eliot)
